The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a large brush fire on September 13th, 2023 at a business called The Farm. An area of cut trees, logs and debris caught fire, and more than 40 personnel responded, including from fire departments in James City County, York County, New Kent, Abingdon, Williamsburg, and Camp Peary. There were no fire hydrants accessible near the fire’s location, so water tankers shuttled water to the site, refilling from the parking lot of the James City County Library on Croaker Road.
